What’s the difference between Asian Greeks and Pan-Hellenic Greeks? The main purpose and practices underlying the Asian Greek system are similar to that of the Pan-Hellenic Greeks. Like the Pan-Hellenic Greeks, we strive for sisterhood, help out in the community and set up exchanges. The main difference is as an Asian interest sorority, most of our members are of Asian, though it is not a requirement. While none of the Asian Greeks here at UCLA have houses, we are still able to maintain close bonds as we are slightly smaller in size. Both Asian and Pan-Hellenic sororities are a good way to be part of the “Greek” community here at UCLA. What’s the difference between Chis and Thetas? Theta Kappa Phi is our sister sorority here at UCLA and, like Chis is a part of the Asian Greek Council. Both Chis and Thetas are Asian interest sororities that participate in similar events throughout the year. The main difference is the variety of girls that make up each sorority. We encourage you to check out both of the sororities to see which group you are more comfortable with. How do you decide who gets a bid? There is an application process by which all active members of the sorority convene to discuss bid extension. As you can see, our sorority is a diverse body of girls for which there is no specific “type” that is preferred. We look for girls that exemplify the qualities and ideals we, as a sorority, look to uphold. Is joining a sorority expensive? Aside from the quarterly dues, which are significantly cheaper than the Pan-Hellenic dues, there are various expenses that go toward food for exchanges, informal, formals, installs, retreats, ski trip, gifts, etc. Some of these are optional, but if does become pricy if you attend everything. However, throughout the year there are fundraisers for the pledge class, as well as the sorority, to help ease the financial burden. It is also possible to arrange a payment plan with the treasurer based on your financial capabilities. Where there is a will, there is a way! We do not want money to be an issue that prevents girls from experiencing Chis! Will pledging interfere with my schoolwork? Pledging does require an investment in time. We like to say, “You get as much out of it as you put in.” Keep in mind that a sorority is not like a high school club that simply makes a list of minimum requirements. Though there are a handful of absolutely mandatory events, we encourage everyone to participate and get to know each other as much as possible. We sincerely strive to achieve sisterhood that reaches beyond the social and college scene. However, academic is a top priority. We have an extensive test file database that you can take advantage of and members must meet a minimum GPA requirement to stay active within the sorority. We offer two scholarships every year to the pledge and active that excels the most academically. Also everyone will receive a calendar of events at the beginning of the school year so that the girls can plan accordingly. |
